Why full moons have names

The traditional month names come from North American and European folk calendars, which tied each full moon to the season's work and wildlife. They are a charming way to track the year — the Wolf Moon of deep winter, the Strawberry Moon of early summer, the Harvest Moon near the autumn equinox.

A "Blue Moon" is the second full moon in a single calendar month, which happens every two to three years. New moons matter too: they mark the darkest skies, ideal for catching meteor showers and faint objects.
